Come hear Dr. Mario Marazziti, cofounder of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty.
Dr. Mario Marazziti, co-founder of the World Coalition against the Death Penalty based in Rome, and an internationally known expert on the death penalty, is in California to talk about the need to pass Proposition 34.
You will hear Dr. Marazziti explain the need and reasons for replacing the death penalty with life without the possibility of parole. The public is invited to come and hear the discussions on how a “Yes on 34” vote will benefit California taxpayers, protect the innocent, and provide much needed funding to local law enforcement. Speaker Biography
Dr. Mario Marazziti is a professional journalist and Vatican Affairs correspondent for RAI, the Italian public Radio-Television group. He is also a spokesperson for the Italian-based lay Catholic movement, Community of Sant’Egidio, known for its tireless efforts on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised and known worldwide for its peacemaking efforts. The Community is presently active in 73 countries with more than 60,000 members.
Dr. Marazziti co-founded the World Coalition against the Death Penalty and has been a member of its Steering Committee since 2002. He played a personal role in orchestrating an appeal for a universal moratorium on the death penalty, gathering more than five million signatures in 153 countries. As a result, the United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of the resolution.
In addition, Dr. Marazziti founded Cities for Life — Cities against the Death Penalty. Every November 30, more than 1,300 cities around the world participate. It was during last year’s celebration that Pope Benedict XVI declared, “I express my hope that your deliberations will encourage the political and legislative initiatives being promoted in a growing number of countries to eliminate the death penalty.”
Dr. Marazziti also co-promoted the global movement of Meetings of Prayer for Peace, inaugurated by the Community of Sant’Egidio in 1987 as a follow up of the historical inter-faith World Day of Prayer for Peace called by Pope John Paul II in 1986 in Assisi. Top-level world religious leaders have been part of this network of dialogue, including the Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomaios I; the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Lau and Metzger; the Dean of Al-Azhar University in Cairo; Anglican Primates Williams and Carey; as well as cardinals, prominent leaders, and representatives of all Christian churches and other world religions.
Dr. Marazziti has published nine books and many essays on religious and social issues, the history of journalism, and international affairs. He has been keynote speaker at many international congresses and at the invitation of U.S. universities such as Harvard and St. John’s.
